My
wife and I have found a reputable breeder and are
trying to agree if the doberman is right for us.
We have done extensive research on the breed but
my wife's concern remains the same. We are talking
about having children in the near future(2yrs or
so) as well as having many children in our famlies
that come over often. Her concern is that the dog
will not be as accepting to kids outside our famliy
as well as neighbors and such and the concern of
intruducing a new born to a potential 2 yr old doberman.
Jade's
reply.
Doberman's
are in my experience very gentle dogs and are loving
towards other family members. They make great family
dogs providing that they have been brought up in
a loving environment and trained appropriately.
If friends and family members are INTRODUCED to
the dog and are not a threat to it they should be
accepted and should have no problems. You will however
find that people that do not like dogs will in turn
make the dog nervous and this can be a problem.
Doberman's do not deserve the reputation that they
have for being vicious. You must remember that they
do however remain very powerful, large dogs and
like ALL breeds could never be trusted 100%. Any
dog can have character flaws regardless of their
breed and should always be kept under control and
monitored with visitors (just in case). I must also
say that I would never recommend that
any dog is left alone with very small children,
but this would apply to any breed.
My main concern is that your dog will become part
of your family and if you start to doubt it when
you eventually have children both you and your dog
could go through lots of upset. Taking on a dog,
ANY dog, is a very big commitment and I would suggest
that you both need to be completely sure that you
are happy with your decision.
I
hope that this reply will help you and I wish you
luck with what ever decision you make.
All
the best, Jade the Doberman
