It's
never to early to start to train your dog. Getting
yourself into the correct habits
is the secret to success. Some of the most important
points to basic dog training are;
- Being
consistent with your responses to your dogs behavior.
For example if your dog is not behaving itself,
just because what ever they are doing looks cute
and might make you laugh you must maintain discipline.
Avoid passing on signals that you think the situation
is funny as this will only encourage your dog
to do the same thing again.
- Be
clear as to what you want from your dog. Remember
it's still easy for you to confuse your dog. Consider
this, two of the most common commands that people
teach their dogs are sit and down. One of the
most common early mistakes which people make is
commanding their dogs to "sit down" to make them
sit. This will obviously confuse the dog , should
it sit or should it lie down? Dogs take everything
literally and this should always be at the front
of your mind.
- Always
be patient with your dog. Sometimes training can
get very frustrating but you should never let
this show. Any upset will only make the whole
process slower. Learning must always be fun to
be effective, you cannot force your dog to learn
you must encourage it to learn.
- If
a dog is to do what you command of it your dog
must know that you are the boss. Your dog will
not know automatically who is in charge you will
have to prove this by the way that you interact
with it. Two good examples would be meal times
and walking into rooms. At meal times you MUST
always eat before your dog, the dominant animal
always gets the first feed. If you let your dog
eat before you at meal times you are telling it
that it is the most important member of the family
as it has the pick of the food and you only get
what has been left. The same applies when walking
into rooms, the dominant dog goes first as part
of it's job is to establish weather it is safe
for the pack (your family) to go into new territory
(the new room). You are the leader and you should
always go first!
